Cases are referred to a restorative justice service by the Procurator Fiscal as an alternative to prosecution in the summary courts.
This type of service was developed in the 1980s by Sacro in conjunction with the Procurator Fiscal Service.
There are currently three such services in Scotland: in North & South Lanarkshire, Edinburgh & Midlothian and Aberdeen City. These services use Shuttle Dialogue or Face-to-Face Meetings, depending on the wishes and circumstances of the participants.
Restorative justice services in the youth justice context are also taking small numbers of referrals from the Procurator Fiscal where the person responsible is 17—18 years old.
